School celebration of Halloween may be axed
Summary
Halloween is celebrated mainly in the United States, but is also celebrated in some Latin American countries such as Panama. Panameñista deputy Alcibiades Vasque is determined to ban Halloween festivities in all Panama public and private educational institutions by establishing a bill. The Halloween holiday occurs the day before the national holiday celebrating Panama's independence from Columbia and Spain. Even though Panama's independence day is a more important holiday in the country than Halloween, children are too distracted with scary parties and forget their patriotic activities, history, and nationality.
My Thoughts, Comments, and/or Reaction
Countries should put their own holidays and traditions before those that they have adopted from around the word. If Panama wasn't strict on banning the celebration of Halloween, the children in school now would forget much of the country's history. I believe that it is still possible for countries to celebrate holidays from other countries, but they should put their own cultures first.
Article's Relation to Culture
Holidays are a good way to express a country's culture. The holidays they do or don't celebrate tells a lot about the country's beliefs and history. Although banning Halloween may harm Panama's relation with the United States, it helps preserve Panama's history in its future generations in school.
